With seasonal changes bringing colds, flu and spring allergies, many people struggle to identify what is causing their symptoms. Doctors say a few key signs can help narrow it down.
According to Cleveland Clinic allergist Sandra Hong, allergies often appear around the same time each year, making seasonal timing an important clue.
Signs it may be allergies
Doctors say itching is one of the most common indicators of allergies. This may include:
- Itchy eyes
- Itchy throat
- Itchy ears
- Sneezing
- Ongoing nasal congestion
Unlike viral infections, allergies usually do not cause fever.
Signs it may be a cold or flu
Colds and flu are more likely to bring symptoms such as:
- Fever
- Body aches
- Chills
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Fatigue
These illnesses also tend to improve faster than allergies, often within days rather than weeks.
Watch for asthma symptoms
Experts warn that people with allergies may also have asthma. If you experience coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath during certain seasons or outdoor activities, medical advice is recommended.
When to seek help
Over-the-counter allergy medicines can help many people, but persistent or worsening symptoms should be discussed with a doctor or allergy specialist.
