The Uttarakhand High Court on Friday reprimanded a couple (boy and girl) who got married against the wishes of their families. The court said what have both of you come here to do.

You are seeking protection from those who raised you. After all, in which direction is this society going?

According to Bar & Bench report, Justice Rakesh Thapliyal was hearing the petition of an 18-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man. Who recently got married in a temple. The court was told that the girl's family did not agree with the marriage and the couple was facing threats from them.

However, the Court raised the question of whether parents should not interfere in the marriage of their children, even if they are adults. The court said what kind of marriage is this? Will they do anything just because they become adults? Shouldn't the opinion of the parents who gave birth to them matter? First they do not even ask their caregivers and then file a petition accusing them of threatening them. Dismissed! The judge said in which direction is the society going? The parents have given birth to them, yet their wishes have no importance.

The bench further remarked that the couple should return to their parents instead of approaching the court. The judge said first ask your parents. They gave birth to you and brought you up with so much difficulty, and now they are your enemies? You feel threatened and you want us to instruct the police to arrest your parents because you have to get married? With this, the court dismissed the case with a fine of Rs 10 lakh. … Why have they come here? Go to your parents? There is no place here for those who do not respect their parents. Make arrangements for your own security, because the law cannot support such people.

Justice Rakesh Thapliyal said, "What kind of marriage is this? Will they do anything since they are adults? Will the views of their birth parents not be heard?"

The court mostly addressed the lawyers representing the couple in Hindi. At one point, the court adjourned the case for some time and asked the petitioner woman to bring her mother's phone number. The court said that he wanted to talk to him.

The judge said, "We will talk to your mother and at least tell her that her daughter is here. If tomorrow she asks how did we give permission for the marriage?"

The court also expressed surprise that the woman had studied only till class XI. It was also told that his partner works in a private company.

Ultimately the court decided not to talk to the woman's parents. Taking into account the age of the couple and their married life, the Court found that state agencies had a legal obligation to ensure their safety. Disposing of the petition, the court directed the police to assess the threat perception of the couple and take necessary steps to protect their life and liberty. Furthermore, the court also directed the police to tell the woman's parents not to take the law into their own hands.

Making an important observation, the Delhi High Court said that clean, usable and respectable toilet facilities are part of the basic working rights of the employees. With this, the court quashed the disciplinary action taken by Jamia Millia Islamia University against a senior woman professor. The female professor had demanded clean and 'western style' toilets in the university.
