Sky News was interrupted for a major breaking news just hours after shots were fired at the White House's correspondents' dinner, forcing US President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, to be evacuated, while other guests ducked under tables for cover. In the fresh report, presenter Saima Mohsin stated: "Let's bring you another update on this developing story. We now have a full story from the Downing Street spokesperson about that call between the Prime Minister [Keir Starmer] and President Donald Trump this afternoon.

"It says 'The Prime Minister extended his wishes to the President and First Lady following the shocking scenes at last night's White House Correspondents' Dinner. He expressed his relief that the President and First Lady were safe, and wished a speedy recovery to the officer injured."

Sky News' Saima continued: "Turning to the Middle East, the leaders discussed the urgent need to get shipping moving again in the Strait of Hormuz, given the severe consequences of global economy and cost of living for people in the UK and globally.

"The Prime minister shared the latest progress on his joint initiative with President Macron to restore freedom of navigation following the military planning conference at Northwood this week."

The presenter added: "'They look forward to speaking again soon,' so, that's the conversation between Downing Street, Prime minister Keir Starmer and the White House live on your screens right now and President Donald Trump after that shooting at the White House Correspondents' dinner."

Hours after the gunman opened fire, Trump hosted a press conference at the White House, where he applauded law enforcement for their swift response.

Still dressed in his tuxedo from the annual black tie dinner, Trump called the assailant a "thug" and a "lone wolf," while Justice Department officials said the suspect has been charged with firearms and assault charges.

The US leader later shared his frustrations on his Truth Social platform and suggested the shooting "would never had happened" in the ballroom he intends to build as part of his $400 million [£296 million] project.

Trump penned: "What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement, and for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE.

"This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House. It cannot be built fast enough! While beautiful, it has every highest level security feature there is plus, there are no rooms sitting on top for unsecured people to pour in, and is inside the gates of the most secure building in the World, The White House.

"The ridiculous Ballroom lawsuit, brought by a woman walking her dog, who has absolutely No Standing to bring such a suit, must be dropped, immediately.

The President insisted: "Nothing should be allowed to interfere with its construction, which is on budget and substantially ahead of schedule!!! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP."
