Gandhinagar: With temperature touching 44 degrees across many places in the state, at least three people including a candidate for Jamnagar Municipal Corporation died due to heart attack on Sunday during the local body elections in Gujarat.
15 Municipal Corporations, 84 Municipalities, 34 District Panchayats, and 260 Taluka Panchayats in Gujarat polled on Sunday sealing the fate of as many as 10005 seats.
However already 733 seats have gone to BJP after candidates from the opposition withdrawing their nominations at the last moment. Union Home Minister reached Ahmedabad on Sunday morning and cast his vote in Naranpura ward along with his family.
This is the first election in Gujarat after the Special Intensive Review of the voter list that had shed 68.13 lakh voters recently and also introduced nine new municipal corporations and a whole new district Vav-Tharad apart from enhancing the OBC quota to 27 percent from earlier 10 percent.

While the ruling BJP controls most of these bodies, this election assumes significance for the opposition Congress as this would be the first election for the party after its much hyped reorganisation process following the consultative model advocated by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The election is also looked at as a litmus test for the all important Assembly election due later next year.
BJP on its part has addressed the anti incumbency issue by dropping more than 70 percent of its sitting candidates, however the rejection has not gone down too well with many candidates who have filed their nominations as independent, which may alter the balance of power in some places.
Meanwhile Aam Aadmi Party is also trying to cement its toehold in Gujarat and is emerging as a political force in the state. Observers maintain that the party will gain a few seats in Surat and south Gujarat and a few more in Saurashtra.
