Rahul Gandhi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ on Sunday, “The murder of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee after the elections by goons associated with TMC is highly condemnable.” The Congress MP expressed his condolences to the family of activist Debdeep Chatterjee.
He further wrote in the post, “Today, there is no democracy in West Bengal, but TMC’s hooliganism. Intimidating, killing and eradicating the opposing voices after the vote, this has become the character of TMC. Congress’s politics has never rested on violence, and will never rest on it. We have also lost our workers, yet we have always chosen the path of non-violence and the Constitution. This is our heritage, this is our resolve.”
Along with this, he demanded full security and compensation to the family. He wrote in the post, “The demand is clear – all the culprits should be immediately arrested, strictest punishment should be given and full security and compensation should be ensured to Debdeep’s family.”
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also said in the ‘X’ post that he will not bow down to this politics which tarnishes India’s non-violent tradition. Justice will be done.
Earlier, the West Bengal unit of the Congress alleged that Debdeep was attacked and brutally beaten by miscreants associated with the ruling party Trinamool Congress, following which he died of his injuries shortly after. According to the state unit of the Congress, Debdeep Chatterjee was known to be working closely with Prosenjit Puitandi, the Congress candidate from Asansol North.
“This tragic incident highlights the complete breakdown of law and order in the state and raises serious questions over the safety of opposition workers in West Bengal. The fact that such violence has taken place so soon after voting reflects a deeply disturbing pattern of political threats and vendetta,” the party said.
