Desk: The technology war between America and China seems to be intensifying once again. This time the controversy is about Artificial Intelligence. The US has instructed its diplomats around the world to raise concerns over the alleged misuse of American technology by Chinese AI companies. According to the report, companies like DeepSeek, Moonshot AI and MiniMax have been accused of using the technology of American AI models. This matter has come to light at a time when preparations are going on for Donald Trump’s visit to China. This may further increase the technical tension between the two countries.
According to the report, the US State Department has given instructions to its embassies and consulates around the world through a confidential diplomatic message. It says that Chinese companies are preparing their own models by extracting technology from American AI models. Especially the name of DeepSeek has been taken prominently. America says that the models prepared in this way claim better performance at lower cost, but they do not have the full capability of the original model. Additionally, important protocols to security and fairness may also be weakened.

AI Distillation is a process in which smaller and cheaper models are created using the output of larger and more expensive AI models. This reduces the development cost significantly. America alleges that some Chinese companies are using models owned by American companies without permission. According to Reuters report, OpenAI also warned US lawmakers in February that companies like DeepSeek were trying to copy ChatGPT and other US AI models. This is the reason why this issue is now being raised at the global level.
This matter has come to light at a time when US President Donald Trump is soon going to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. In October last year, the technical tension between the two countries had reduced somewhat, but now this dispute can heat up the atmosphere again. China has called the American allegations baseless and said that it takes the protection of intellectual property rights seriously. DeepSeek has also recently introduced a new AI model for Huawei chips, further strengthening China’s technological self-reliance.
