Super Mario Galaxy Movie Faces New Competition
The release of the Michael Jackson biopic has knocked The Super Mario Galaxy Movie from its top spot in North America's box office rankings. Nevertheless, the animated sequel is poised to outshine two significant Marvel hits over the course of a single weekend. As it nears its fourth weekend in theaters, the film is on track to surpass the earnings of both Deadpool and Deadpool 2.
On its fourth Friday, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned $4.6 million, marking the second-highest earnings for a video game adaptation on its fourth Friday, just behind its predecessor, which made $8.9 million. The film's domestic earnings have now reached $369.9 million, with projections estimating around $20 million for its fourth weekend, potentially bringing its total to $385 million.
Internationally, the film has also performed remarkably well, raking in over $411.4 million from overseas markets. When combined with its domestic revenue, the global total stands at $781.2 million after just 24 days in theaters. Analysts believe the film is on track to exceed $850 million worldwide, with a chance of hitting $900 million by the end of its fourth weekend.
In comparison, the Deadpool franchise has enjoyed considerable success, with the first film grossing $782.8 million and the sequel earning $785.9 million globally. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has already surpassed the $785 million mark, positioning it to outperform both Deadpool films within the same weekend.
While the third installment, Deadpool & Wolverine, has grossed an impressive $1.3 billion globally and remains the highest-grossing film since the pandemic, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is projected to earn between $1 billion and $1.1 billion worldwide. Although it may not surpass Deadpool & Wolverine, its ability to outpace the earlier Deadpool films will keep it in the limelight, especially with the excitement surrounding the Michael Jackson biopic. The animated sequel premiered on April 1.
