Equal Prize Pots: For the first time in 2024, the London Marathon introduced parity across all elite categories. The prize money is identical for the Elite Men, Elite Women, and Wheelchair races, making it the first marathon in the world to offer equal payouts to wheelchair and able-bodied athletes.
Winner's Payout: The winner of each elite race (Men, Women, and Wheelchair) receives a base prize of approximately £44,000. The runner-up takes home roughly £24,000, with prize money scaling down to approximately £800 for the 12th-place finisher.
Time Bonuses: Athletes can significantly increase their earnings by hitting fast times. For the able-bodied elite races, finishing under 2:02:00 (men) or 2:15:00 (women) yields a massive £120,000 bonus. Smaller bonuses are available for other sub-2:04:00 (men) or sub-2:17:00 (women) performances.
World and Course Records: Breaking the world record is the most lucrative achievement, carrying a £100,000 bonus. Additionally, a £20,000 bonus is awarded for breaking the London course record. For the wheelchair races, a course record earns a £4,000 bonus.
Total Potential Earnings: Because bonuses are not cumulative, the maximum a winner could theoretically walk away with is approximately £244,000. This would require finishing first (£44,000) while simultaneously breaking the world record (£100,000) and achieving the fastest time-bonus bracket (£100,000).
