Morigaon, April 26: The Yangli festival, also referred to as the ‘Lakshmi Adora’ festival, concluded on Friday at West Karbi Amsai Pinung, located near Neli in Morigaon district. This festival is a significant agrarian celebration for the Tiwa community, held every five years during the Bohag month, and was marked by vibrant participation from various villages.

During the three-day event, local youths arrived at the Yangli ground adorned in traditional garments like Tagla, Thenas, Phaga, and Tongali, brandishing Lankhui (shields and swords). They engaged in traditional songs and dances, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of Khram and Pangsi.

It is widely believed that Goddess Lakshmi's favor is essential for alleviating hunger in human life. Thus, the ‘Lakshmi Adora’ festival remains a cherished tradition within the community, reflecting their ancient customs.

To honor Goddess Lakshmi, offerings of ducks, pigeons, and goats were made both at homes and at the Yangli ground, where villagers participated in the rituals. A young man was specially attired to symbolize Lakshmi, and worship rituals were conducted for the deity.

Women from the village distributed Wanguri (rice flour cakes) and Ju Lau (traditional rice beer) to the performers, signifying respect and honor from the elder women, which holds special importance during the festival.

The festival aims to invoke Goddess Lakshmi's blessings for fruitful agricultural endeavors in the future. Consequently, the Tiwa community continues to celebrate this event every five years. Notably, Gobha Deoraja Dipsing Deoraja also attended this year's Yangli festival.
