I eat sourdough bread every day - 1 supermarket loaf beats Jason's

I eat sourdough bread every day and, while I occasionally bake my own loaf using my own starter, it is undeniably more practical to grab one during my weekly shop. It has surged in popularity in recent months, largely owing to its reputation for being easier to digest, more nutritious and having a lesser impact on blood sugar levels.

However, there is now a vast array available on the market, which can make it rather difficult to determine which one suits you best and which boasts the finest flavour. I have conducted several taste tests over the past few months, including sourdough, and one supermarket remains my undisputed favourite.

My top pick is the San Francisco Style Sourdough loaf from M&S. The description reads: "Our San Francisco Style Sourdough embodies the iconic tangy taste and chewy texture the city is famous for. Crafted using traditional methods and a distinct starter, it has a crisp crust and a soft, airy interior."

It keeps well for days in my bread bin and delivers the ideal taste and texture. It differs from Jason's Sourdough white loaf in that I find it has a softer texture and a gentler tang, which I greatly prefer in a sourdough.

The crumb and crust are less chewy than Jason's, in my view, and it freezes equally well.

At times, I find it ready-sliced at my local branch, and on other occasions, I slice it myself at home.

While it is fairly pricey, it is widely available, and I rarely find myself wasting any of the loaf as the subtle sourdough flavour never becomes tiresome.

If there is any leftover, I freeze the slices, ready whenever I fancy them.

Prices vary between M&S stores, but I typically pay around £3 for a loaf, which is quite pricey, so I make sure not to waste any.

While it's wonderful toasted with butter, I particularly enjoy using it for toasties as it has a perfect crunch.

Having sampled numerous sourdough loaves over the years, including one from Tesco's bakery, M&S's San Francisco Style Sourdough continues to reign as my firm favourite.
