Secret Service agent was shot

Trump said that one Secret Service officer was shot at very close range during the incident, but was saved by a bulletproof vest.

"I just spoke to the officer, and he's doing great," Trump said. "He has very high spirits, and we told him we love him and respect him, and he's a very proud guy."

I don't think it's related to Iran: Trump

When reporters asked US President Trump if the incident was in any way related to the ongoing tension with Iran, Trump dismissed the theory.

He said, "I don't think it's related to Iran."

I am here to do the job: Trump

"It's a dangerous profession, but I am here to do the job. But with that comes risk," Trump said about being targeted again in less than a year.

He also spoke about the previous incidents before he was re-elected, including at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and another time while Trump was golfing in Palm Beach, Florida.

'A very sick person', Trump said about the suspect

The suspect, now in custody, was “a very sick person,” Trump said.

“We don’t want things like this to happen,” he added.

The event will be rescheduled within the next 30 days, and he said it will be “bigger and better and even nicer.”

Trump also thanks the Secret Service "for saving my life, they did a great job."

"I want to live and work for this country. When you are impactful, they come after you."

"Suspect is from California," Trump said.
According to the President he was probably a "lone shooter but will find out."

Authorities have identified the suspect as a 30-year-old California man, law enforcement officials told CNN.

Suspect had multiple weapons

A man armed with multiple weapons wearing a bulletproof vest charged a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday, wounding a law enforcement officer, President Donald Trump said.

President Trump is now briefing reporters from the White House.

"This was an event dedicated to freedom of speech that was meant to unify," he said.

"I fought like hell this evening", he said during his press conference.

Trump said he initially didn't want to leave. "I fought like hell to stay," he says. But he was advised that it was protocol to leave because it was unclear if it was a lone shooter.

Shots were fired as US President Donald Trump attended a media gala in Washington on Saturday night, with the gunman detained at a screening area just outside the hotel ballroom where hundreds of guests had gathered.

Trump was rushed off the stage and security teams swarmed past groups of invitees at the black-tie White House Correspondents' Dinner, as people dived under tables in chaotic scenes.
