The upcoming biopic “Michael”, based on the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, has sparked discussion after it was revealed that the film does not include one of the most controversial chapters of his life — the 1993 child abuse allegations.

The film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew and son of Jermaine Jackson, in the lead role. It focuses on the singer’s journey to global superstardom and his rise as one of the most influential entertainers in music history.

However, the narrative notably ends around 1988, deliberately avoiding the period when Jackson faced serious legal accusations. In 1993, he was accused by 13-year-old Jordan Chandler of sexual abuse, a case that later reached a financial settlement reportedly worth $25 million, with strict confidentiality terms.

Earlier reports suggested that the film was initially planned to open with the 1993 police investigation at Neverland Ranch, the singer’s famous California estate. Director Antoine Fuqua had indicated that the legal controversy was part of early development discussions.

But the final version takes a different direction, choosing not to dramatize the allegations or legal battles. Industry reports suggest that legal restrictions linked to the settlement may have influenced the decision, as the Chandler family cannot be portrayed or referenced in any dramatized production.

The choice has divided opinion, with some seeing it as a focus on Jackson’s artistic legacy, while others argue it presents an incomplete picture of his life story.

The film instead emphasizes Jackson’s music career, fame, and cultural impact, while avoiding his most debated personal controversies.
