Final Fantasy Fan Fest confirmed that FFXIV Online is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, and director Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida has also affirmed that Joy-Con mouse controls will be supported at launch.
After briefly demoing the Switch 2 version live on stage, Yoshi-P confirmed a few more details about what fans can expect from the portable version during a press conference. Not only will players be able to use the built-in Joy-Con mouse controls, but they'll be able to hook up a proper keyboard too.
"The Nintendo Switch 2 is a wonderful console," Yoshi-P says. "You are more free to choose what mode to play in. I hope that players will find the way to play that is most suited for themselves."
He uses the example of Savage Raid players potentially preferring to hook up a mouse and keyboard to enjoy the content on a big screen. More casual players, meanwhile, might prefer to stick to a controller for gathering and crafting.
"Of course with the shift of a daily cycle to now more of a weekly cycle you can choose what you want to focus on," he says, referring to the upcoming change to the rewards system that's scheduled to arrive with the Evercold expansion in January 2027.
Yoshi-P also tempers performance expectations of FFXIV Online on Nintendo Switch 2. It was tricky to discern what sort of frame rate the game was running at during the stage demo, but the director reassured players that they 'don't have to be concerned'.
"I want to be honest with you, we are working really hard on the optimization for the platform," he explains. "We are striving to get the best performance.
"I think with the towns you may see a lower framerate - only because there are so many players that are rendered on the screen. But we are still able to reach 30fps in a stable state."
FFXIV is set to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026. There will be a month-long early access period which will be free to play, after which you'll need to pay a separate monthly subscription.
