With a new lightweight battery, 2200 horsepower and advanced engineering, this car offers a glimpse into the future of EV technology.

If you think EVs are slow or not made for racing, American company Ford is about to dispel that misconception once and for all. The company’s electric drag car, the Ford Super Cobra Jet 2200 Mustang, has set a new world record for its speed. How was this new record possible?

This is the second world record for Cobra Jet EV in NHRA history. Earlier, in 2021, this car set the record of 8.128 seconds. To bring the time down to under 7 seconds this time, the original Cobra Jet 2200 EV was fitted with a completely new battery system. The new battery is 40 percent lighter than before and produces 30 percent more power. This combination of reduced weight and increased power is the secret behind this new record.

Specifications details

Power 2,200 Whp
Top speed 355.66 km per hour
Time 6.87 seconds
Battery 32-kilowatt-hour (kWh) (900-volt, dual-motor)
Weight approx 1500 kg

Features of the car

The real strength of the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 lies in its engineering. This machine produces an incredible 2,200 Whp of power. To handle this power, it is equipped with a 900-volt dual-motor setup and a 32-kWh battery. The most surprising thing is her weight. Despite this power, this car weighs only 1500 kg. Thanks to this excellent power-to-weight ratio, it reaches a whopping speed of 355.67 kmph on the drag strip in just 6.87 seconds.

Record breaking speed

This all-electric Mustang reached a top speed of approximately 355 km/h in 6.87 seconds in its race debut. This surpassed the previous record of 326.46 km/h held by Steve Huff. Ford Racing expects the car to perform even better in the future.

How did this journey begin?

Ford’s journey into the world of electric speed began in 2020 with the Cobra Jet 1400, which was launched to showcase its technology in challenging drag racing events. At that time, the car reached a speed of 170 miles per hour and completed the race in a time of 8 seconds. This was followed by the Super Cobra Jet 1800, in which Ford increased power by 400 horsepower and reduced weight to enable the car to finish the race in under 7 seconds.

The next and most advanced step in this evolution is the new Cobra Jet 2200. Ford designed the car in partnership with ML-E Racecars as a fully ‘Pro Modified’ racing machine. Its most important feature is its lightweight design. Thanks to the new technology and design, it is almost 500 kg lighter than its predecessor. Moreover, to handle this enormous power, it has an extremely strong chassis with double frame rails. Although it looks like a Mustang on the outside, this car is a pure racing beast on the inside, built to break all current EV records.

State-of-the-art systems inside

The car’s true potential lies in its state-of-the-art systems, where Ford has successfully combined traditional racing and modern electric technology. It has a Liberty Equalizer 5-speed transmission with Ford’s patented RACC (Reverse-Acting Centrifugal Clutch) system. This clutch system is so advanced that it can accelerate the car like a rocket from zero RPM.

To balance this massive power, Ford has used four separate battery packs. These packs are strategically placed to distribute the weight of the vehicle. The largest battery is in the center, just below the driver, while the medium-sized pack is placed in front of the firewall and the other two batteries are placed behind the driver. This unique design not only gives the car 2,200 horsepower, but also provides excellent balance and grip on the track.

125 Years of Ford Racing

This car is not just a prototype. It demonstrates Ford’s deep involvement in the world of motorsports. The company is celebrating its 125th year in racing. Cars like these can be created with the help of data and technology gained from various racing events.
