It has been a disappointing few matches for Shubman Gill and the Gujarat Titans. With only 3 wins in 7 games they sit in 7th in the IPL 2026 points table, and with this latest loss against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, will be kicking themselves they failed to take the game deeper.

Batting first they amassed 205 for the loss of only 3 wickets and although it seems a good score this looked like a target they could have significantly improved upon by going at a much higher rate in the later overs. It looks like an opportunity missed to truly cement the game.

With the ball they once again looked off the pace as the bowlers struggled to keep it tight and fail to take crucial wickets when needed. The game was over before it got to the final over as the Titans collapsed.

Former India batsman Virender Sehwag didn't hold back while talking about Gill's leadership in the game. He questioned the tactics in the death overs and suggested that the team didn't display enough fighting spirit.

On Cricbuzz, Sehwag said:

“When 22-25 runs were needed off the last three overs, and if Mohammed Siraj had come in at that stage and got a wicket, maybe it would have been 20 needed off 2 overs, and who knows what would have happened from there. They could have at least taken the game to the last over. The match did not even go till the final over."

Sehwag also said that Gill didn't use his trump bowlers in the latter stages of the match. He felt that a captain needs to rely on his best men irrespective of how expensive they have been through the game.

Sehwag added:

“I think the calculations were slightly wrong from the captain there. Fine, Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan got hit for runs, but it is the captain's job to bring them back into the attack. If you think that you cannot use a bowler because he has conceded 31 runs off two overs, then you have lost courage, right? That means you have given up. I think that was the mistake there."

Gujarat Titans possessed world-class bowlers like Rashid Khan and Prasidh Krishna but their usage at death has been the recurring concern. This has been the case several times with Gujarat this season in closely contested games.

The Gujarat Titans will have to resolve these issues soon as the tournament progresses, and captain Gill's performance at the helm will be under the scanner.
