A major football club are set to finally change their name after more than two decades of campaigning from supporters. Deportivo de la Coruna, more commonly known as Deportivo la Coruna or simply Deportivo, are currently a second-tier side but remain iconic in Spanish football. They reached the Champions League semi-finals back in 2004 and regularly finished near the top of La Liga between 1992 and 2010.
Fans have been calling for a subtle name change for many years in order to reflect the club's Galician heritage. After nearly three decades of campaigning, they are set to have their wish granted. The team will officially become known as Deportivo da Coruna, aligning with the local Galician language and the city's correct place name.
The decision marks the end of a 25-year mission by fans, activists and the people of A Coruna, who have been determined to bring about a full reflection of the club's regional identity.
The subtle yet meaningful name change was initially revealed by Radio Galega, confirming that Deportivo had finally responded to long-term calls from supporters.
Earlier this year, students and teachers from IES Rafael Dieste organised a rally near the club's Riazor stadium using the slogan: "Depor is from A Coruna." The event drew huge crowds and even featured live music.
The campaign dates back to the 1990s, when the issue was repeatedly raised at shareholder meetings.
It was initially brushed aside but momentum grew over time, with the mission coming to a head when a fan survey was launched last year.
The response was overwhelming and it became clear that action was required, pushing the club towards finally making the name change.
Deportivo aren't the only club to have taken on a new moniker in recent years. Back in 2019, fourth-tier side Mostoles Balompie bizarrely changed their name to Flat Earth FC in a move driven by controversial owner Javi Poves.
He defended the conspiracy by questioning people's motives behind proving him wrong, claiming that he had "never felt the Earth move".
"There is a huge economic motive for which many people want to convince us that the Earth is round," he told Cadena SER. "If the Earth is spherical, why are so many people scared?"
Poves left his ownership role the following year and the club are now known as Fuenlabrada Promesas, the reserve team of current owners CF Fuenlabrada.
