Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has stayed in the IPL conversation throughout every season since 2026. Green entered the IPL in 2023 when the Mumbai Indians signed him for ₹17.50 crore which made him the second-most expensive player in league history at that time. He delivered value for the investment through his 452 runs performance across 16 matches which included a batting average above 50 and a strike rate that surpassed 160 together with a century performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The following season, he moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore for the same amount and again delivered. Green scored 255 runs and picked up 10 wickets, playing a key role as RCB staged a stunning comeback. The team went from one win in eight matches to reaching the playoffs in a remarkable turnaround.
Green required injury treatment which stopped him from participating in retention plans and he missed the 2025 mega auction. By 2026 his all-round ability made him one of the most sought-after players again.
Massive Auction Gamble Of KKR:
After finishing eighth in IPL 2025 the Kolkata Knight Riders decided to implement complete roster changes. Abhishek Nayar took over as head coach after Chandrakant Pandit decided to quit the position. The support staff welcomed Shane Watson and Tim Southee who joined Nayar and Dwayne Bravo.
KKR started their retention deadline process by making aggressive roster moves. They released Andre Russell who had been with them since 2013 and Venkatesh Iyer their 2025 vice-captain who cost ₹23.75 crore. The team released multiple overseas players who had failed to meet performance expectations. The KKR team entered the IPL 2026 mini-auction with a budget of ₹64.30 crore and they needed to fill six overseas player positions.
Russell retired from the IPL before the auction started and he became a member of KKR's support staff. The team required one overseas player who could perform consistently in the middle and lower batting positions while assisting Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh with his bowling skills. Cameron Green perfectly matched the required position. Green who first appeared in the batters' section later explained that he had made a registration mistake and he would pitch during IPL 2026.
The confirmation led KKR to invest ₹25.20 crore in his services. The franchise spent ₹18 crore on Matheesha Pathirana and ₹9 crore on Mustafizur Rahman although they expected different results from the second player signing. The KKR team encountered various challenges at the start of the season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India instructed them to release Mustafizur, though they replaced him with Blessing Muzarabani.
The team suffered two major player losses when Harshit Rana became unavailable for the entire season and Pathirana missed approximately 50 percent of the time. The team then landed in controversy after their opening match. Green scored just 18 runs, but half-centuries from Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi helped KKR post 220 against Mumbai Indians. The chase turned into a display of dominance by Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, while Rahane deployed six bowlers who he chose, except for Green.
The statement which Rahane made to "Ask Cricket Australia" created a situation which brought about public debate. Cricket Australia later confirmed that Green was starting to return to his regular activities but needed 10 to 12 days for complete recovery. The organization confirmed that KKR already possessed this information.
Cameron Green's Poor IPL 2026 Form:
Green pitched only during KKR's fourth game against Lucknow Super Giants. By that time, his batting performance had dropped to below expected levels. He achieved an unbroken 32 run score during the match because he maintained a slower batting pace than desired. He bowled two overs which resulted in one wicket but his expensive 28 run delivery cost him 28 runs while trying to defend 182 runs.
LSG required 30 runs from two overs when Green bowled the 19th over which resulted in 16 runs scored by Mukul Choudhary who made his first appearance and helped his team win the match during the last over.
Cameron Green has faced difficulties throughout his entire IPL 2026 season. Although he scored 79 runs against the Gujarat Titans, his performance did not lead to victory. He has achieved 162 runs across seven matches with a 27 batting average and a batting strike rate above 150 which includes one fifty.
His bowling performance, which should have established equilibrium for the team, has failed to meet expectations. He has achieved one wicket through his bowling which results in an 85 bowling average and his economy rate exceeds 14 runs per over.
IPL's Auction System Has a Fitness Loophole Nobody Wants to Fix:
People find it simple to claim that KKR made an expensive error, yet they could not foresee his performance decline. The present situation presents an essential inquiry which asks whether players should need a fitness certificate before they can participate in the auction. The situation has multiple aspects that need examination. The fitness declaration process provides some assistance; however, because injuries can emerge at any point, this method lacks dependability.

The auction system precedes tournaments by several months which makes it impossible to accurately assess players' fitness levels. A player who lacks fitness in January will become healthy by March while the opposite situation applies to another athlete.
Franchises must ultimately make these calls themselves, as they understand the risks. KKR opted against replacing Harshit Rana because they believed their existing pace bowlers could handle his absence. Another debate exists about whether players should receive such high earnings. Players salaries increase because the auction system determines their pay rates which makes it impossible for players like Green and Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant to determine their market values.
High salaries bring immense pressure. KKR made a strategic decision to acquire Green but their lack of access to his fitness data limited their ability to create their operational strategy. The franchise did not experience complete failure because they developed a strategic plan which became unworkable following player injuries.
