Sri Lanka : A new and uncomfortable situation has arisen in front of Sri Lanka which is trying to recover from the economic crisis. While repaying the installment of loan taken from abroad, the Sri Lankan Finance Ministry made a big mistake, due to which the amount of 25 lakh dollars (about more than Rs 21 crore) reached the bank account of a hacker instead of the real lender. After the matter came to light, the government has accepted this mistake and efforts have been started to bring back the amount.

The matter came to light when the opposition raised the issue in Parliament and sought answers from the government. After this, Sri Lankan Finance Ministry Secretary Harshana Supriyapperuma officially said that cyber intrusion was done through email in the system of the Ministry’s External Resources Department. He told that the government had received information about this cyber attack in the month of January itself. According to him, “We came to know in January that cyber criminals were trying to penetrate the systems of the External Resources Department of the Finance Ministry. After this, the countries to which the payments were to be made were contacted and efforts were made to handle the situation.”
According to some reports, Sri Lanka has to repay a loan of about $22.9 million taken from Australia. 25 lakh dollars was sent as the installment of this loan for the month of December. But instead of reaching the Australian government account, this amount was transferred to a bank account controlled by a hacker. This serious matter was first disclosed by the Sri Lankan opposition. A group of opposition lawyers has written a letter to the Speaker of Parliament alleging that the government payment has gone into the wrong account. Demanding an impartial investigation into this entire matter, he said that the protection of public money is the responsibility of Parliament and such a huge negligence cannot be ignored.
This matter was also raised in the proceedings of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, where answers were sought from the officials. The opposition says that this is not just a technical mistake but a serious matter to national financial security. At the same time, when Australia’s reaction was sought on this entire incident, the Australian High Commission present in Sri Lanka said that they were aware of this matter. The High Commission said that the Australian Government is working with Sri Lankan authorities to improve the situation and work is underway to recover the funds.
Currently, the investigating agencies are trying to find out how the hacker broke into the email system, how the payment process was affected and whether any internal negligence played a role in it. This incident is considered very sensitive for Sri Lanka, which once suffered from severe economic crisis, severe shortage of foreign exchange and mass movement. At a time when the country is trying to win back the trust of international institutions and foreign governments, such a cyber lapse could have a major impact on its credibility.
