Fans of The Testaments have been left intrigued by a subtle clue regarding Garth's parents that appeared in episode 5.

The Handmaid's Tale sequel series is in full swing on Disney Plus, with new episodes arriving every Wednesday. The show centres on main character June Osborne's (Elisabeth Moss) biological daughter Agnes (Chase Infiniti).

Now grown up, Agnes is attending Aunt Lydia's (Ann Dowd) preparatory school for prospective wives. Although the young woman has been brought up embracing Gilead's values, she is gradually becoming aware of the harsh realities facing women under the oppressive regime.

However, the teenager discovered a glimmer of hope in the latest episode, upon learning that her crush Garth (Brad Alexander) is destined to become a commander.

This means Agnes could have the opportunity to marry for love, rather than being matched with a considerably older man, reports the Mirror.

The new instalment also offered viewers a hint regarding the identity of Garth's father. In the closing moments of the episode, Garth is shown driving Agnes and her father, Commander MacKenzie (Nate Corddry), home.

MacKenzie then congratulates Garth on his promotion, before adding: "We need men like yourself, and like your father. Willing to rise to the occasion."

The identity of Garth's parents remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Alexander has disclosed that his character's father was a "well-renowned Commander and a fighter of Gilead, up until the Boston moment".

The actor revealed to Variety that Garth's father was wounded during the events viewers witnessed at the conclusion of The Handmaid's Tale. According to Alexander, Garth is "angry at the system that raised him".

This does not entirely assist viewers in pinpointing the guard's heritage. Nevertheless, it sheds light on Garth's motivations for joining the Mayday resistance mission.

The upcoming sixth episode will explore Agnes' desire to wed Garth.

A synopsis states: "As the Aunts sift through ancestry records to finalise matches, Agnes plots for her chance at love. Meanwhile, Lydia contemplates the choices that shaped her rise in Gilead."

Meanwhile, fellow central character Daisy (Lucy Halliday) continues her struggle to escape Gilead after infiltrating the state as a Mayday spy.

The Testaments continues on Disney+ next Wednesday, April 29.
