TORONTO (AP) - The Toronto Blue Jays have decided to move Jeff Hoffman out of his role as closer, as confirmed by general manager Ross Atkins prior to Friday's game against the Cleveland Guardians.
Atkins stated, "In the short term, we are going to share that responsibility," indicating a collaborative approach to the closing duties moving forward.
Hoffman's Performance Overview
This season, Hoffman has recorded a 1-2 record with three saves out of six opportunities and holds a 7.59 ERA across 12 games, marking his second season with the Blue Jays.
Notably, he faced significant pressure during Game 7 of the 2025 World Series, where he surrendered a game-tying home run to Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas, which ultimately contributed to the team's loss.
Recent Game Analysis
In a recent game against the Los Angeles Angels, Hoffman entered the ninth inning seeking a save but struggled as four consecutive batters reached base, including two who were hit by pitches. He was replaced by Louis Varland, who managed to secure the game-ending double play.
Future Closing Candidates
As the Blue Jays look to adjust their closing strategy, Varland and sidearming right-hander Tyler Rogers have emerged as potential candidates to take on the closing duties in Hoffman's absence.
Contract and Career Background
Hoffman signed a three-year contract worth $33 million with Toronto in January 2025 and was recognized as a first-time All-Star during his time with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024.
The Blue Jays originally selected Hoffman ninth overall in the 2014 draft, but he was traded to the Colorado Rockies the following year in a major deal that brought star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto.
