New Delhi/Chandigarh: On Friday, there was such a political upheaval in the politics of Delhi and Punjab, which hardly anyone could have imagined. Veteran Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha not only resigned from the party but also surprised everyone by announcing that he would join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But the real bombshell came when Raghav claimed that he was not going alone, but more than two-thirds of AAP’s MPs were going to merge with him into BJP.
Raghav Chaddha’s big claim: Paperwork has been completed
Raghav Chadha looked very aggressive during the press conference. He clearly said that the Aam Aadmi Party has now forgotten its basic principles and ideals. Raghav said that AAP has a total of 10 MPs in Rajya Sabha and 7 of them are standing with his decision. According to him, all the MPs have signed the necessary documents and this paper process has been handed over to the Chairman of Rajya Sabha. “I am moving away from the Aam Aadmi Party and moving towards the people,” he said with a heavy heart.
Who are those 7 MPs? See the complete possible list here
There is an uproar in political circles after the names of possible MPs accompanying Raghav Chadha came out. The names that are said to be included in this list are as follows:
- Swati Maliwal: Former Delhi Women Commission chairperson Swati Maliwal’s relations with the party leadership have been quite strained for the last few months.
- Ashok Kumar Mittal: Punjab MP Ashok Mittal was recently made the deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, but now he is changing sides.
- Sanjeev Arora: Punjab’s big businessman and MP Sanjeev Arora is also said to be included in this list.
- Sandeep Pathak: The departure of Sandeep Pathak, considered the party’s Chanakya and election strategist, is the biggest organizational blow for AAP.
- Harbhajan Singh: The name of former veteran cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh is also a topic of discussion in this possible list.
- Balbir Singh Seechewal: The name of Seechewal, famous in the environment field and MP from Punjab, has also come up in the merger discussions.
- Vikramjit Singh Sahni: Well-known industrialist and social worker Vikramjit Sahni is also said to be a part of this group.
“Right man in the wrong party”: Kejriwal gets the biggest shock till date
Recalling his 15-year journey, Raghav Chadha emotionally said that he had nurtured this party with his blood and sweat. But in the end he felt he had become “the right man in the wrong party”. He made serious allegations that the party has now deviated from national interest and indulged in personal interests.
What is the political meaning of this merger?
If this claim of Raghav Chadha is legally successful and 7 MPs join BJP together, then the Anti-Defection Law will not be applicable on them. This may prove to be the biggest challenge ever to the existence of the Aam Aadmi Party. The strength of ‘AAP’ in Rajya Sabha will almost end. Now all eyes are on the decision of the Rajya Sabha Chairman whether he gives official approval to this merger.
