Patna: The Bihar government has taken several historic decisions to strengthen the urban development and administrative structure of the state. In the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, 22 important proposals were approved, which include development of 11 new satellite townships, temporary ban on buying and selling of land and major initiatives for women’s safety. These decisions could deeply impact the urban structure and social order of Bihar in the years to come.

Bihar’s urban map will change with 11 new satellite towns

The state government has approved to develop 11 modern satellite towns in Bihar. The objective of these townships is to reduce the increasing population pressure on big cities and promote planned urbanization. These new cities will be based on ancient names to give them historical and cultural identity.

For example, the township to be built near Patna will be named “Patliputra” and the area to be built near Sonpur will be named “Hariharnathpur”. The Urban Development Department will prepare a master plan for these areas, which will include core area, special zone and detailed land use plan.

Temporary ban on buying and selling of land in 11 areas

To ensure systematic development of satellite townships, the government has banned the purchase and sale of land in these 11 areas with immediate effect. This ban will remain in effect till March 31, 2027 around Patna, Sonpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Purnia and Munger, while around Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Bhagalpur and Chapra it will remain in effect till June 30, 2027.

The aim of this step is to prevent unplanned construction and land encroachment so that these areas can be developed as modern cities in future.

4700 “Police Didi” will be deployed for the safety of women.

The state government has launched “Police Didi” scheme to strengthen women safety. Under this, 4700 women policemen will be deployed for patrolling in schools, colleges and public places. For this, 1500 scooters and 3200 motorcycles will be purchased, so that women policemen will be able to reach different areas quickly.

The main objective of this initiative is to provide a safe environment to girl students and women and to effectively stop incidents like eve-teasing.

Big decision to declare road accidents a disaster

Taking an important decision, the Cabinet has now included mass road accidents in the category of local disaster. Under this, the dead and injured in road accidents will be given compensation directly from the Disaster Relief Fund. This provision will also be applicable to old cases, so that the affected families can get immediate financial assistance. This step is considered important towards making the relief distribution system simpler and faster.

Religious and cultural tourism will get a boost

The plan to develop the historical Baba Hariharnath temple located in Sonpur on the lines of Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has been approved. Rs 680 crore has been sanctioned for this project.

This corridor will beautify the temple complex and modern facilities will be developed for the devotees. This is expected to give Sonpur recognition as a major religious tourist destination at the national level.

Big expansion in education, research and air connectivity

Bihar government has approved several projects to strengthen education and infrastructure. A campus of National Forensic Sciences University will be set up in Punpun, while 20 acres of land has been allotted for the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Begusarai.

Apart from this, a research park will be developed in IIT Patna at a cost of Rs 305 crore. There is also a plan to build new greenfield airports in Sonpur and Ajgabinath Dham, which will further strengthen the air connectivity of the state.
