The Odisha government on Friday ordered all schools across the state to advance their summer vacations. This decision was taken in view of the severe heatwave conditions.
Bhubaneswar: In light of the severe heatwave sweeping across Odisha, the government on Friday declared early summer vacations for students, announcing the closure of all schools in the state starting April 27. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated that, keeping the safety and well-being of students in mind, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved a proposal submitted by the School and Mass Education (SME) Department to advance the summer vacations.
The CMO further stated that all government and private educational institutions will remain closed starting April 27. Given the significant rise in temperatures across several districts, the government has taken this step to prioritize the safety and well-being of students.
Examinations to Proceed as Scheduled
The order issued by the Odisha government states that all government, government-aided, and private schools in the state will close for summer vacations starting April 27. However, pre-scheduled examinations, census-related duties, and other administrative tasks will continue as usual.
Vacations Previously Began After May
Officials noted that summer vacations for students in the state typically commence after the first week of May. However, the proposal to advance the summer vacations was put forward because, in recent days, temperatures in several districts have soared above 40 degrees Celsius. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Chandra Pujari also informed that, in view of the rising temperatures, Anganwadi centers will also be closed shortly, and arrangements will be made to deliver rations to children through a door-to-door distribution system.
Temperatures Exceed 40 Degrees in Odisha
It is noteworthy that on Thursday, temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher were recorded at at least 24 locations across Odisha. The Meteorological Department has forecast that in the coming days, when the heat reaches its peak, daytime temperatures in some parts of the state could rise to approximately 45 degrees Celsius.
