Indian Railways: Under the new rules of Indian Railways, disabled passengers holding a valid UDID card—or those entitled to railway concessions—can now travel in the designated SLRD/LSLRD coaches on Mail and Express trains.

Indian Railways' New Rules for Disabled Persons: Indian Railways has taken a significant decision to make travel easier and more convenient for disabled passengers. Under the new regulations, individuals possessing a valid UDID card are now permitted to travel in the special coaches specifically designed for disabled persons on Mail and Express trains. This initiative has been undertaken primarily to facilitate passengers who require additional comfort and assistance during their journeys.

According to the Railways, to travel in these coaches, passengers—whether holding a UDID card or availing of railway-issued concessions—must possess a valid ticket. A key highlight is that these coaches have been designed in a manner that ensures disabled passengers face no difficulties and can travel in comfort. The Railways has also clarified that the benefits of these facilities will be extended only to eligible passengers.

Who is Eligible to Travel?

Individuals holding a UDID card are eligible to travel in these coaches.
Additionally, passengers who receive fare concessions from the Railways are also eligible.
Please note that possessing a valid ticket is mandatory for travel.

Special Coach Facilities (SLRD / LSLRD)

These coaches have been specially constructed for disabled passengers to ensure a hassle-free journey.
SLRD (Second Class Luggage-cum-Brake Van with Compartment for Disabled Persons): This coach features a separate compartment for disabled passengers, alongside space designated for luggage storage.
Similar special amenities are also provided to passengers traveling in LSLRD coaches.
The seating arrangements and interior space within these coaches are designed to ensure that the journey remains as easy and comfortable as possible for the passengers.

Action to be Taken Against Unauthorized Passengers

Strict action will be taken against any individual found traveling in these coaches without proper authorization. They may face fines and other penalties under the Railway Act, 1989.
This measure is being implemented to ensure that these facilities are utilized exclusively by those who are genuinely in need.

What is the Divyangjan Card?

It is an essential card issued by the Railways, known as the EPICS.
It entitles passengers with disabilities to concessions on railway fares.
It is issued based on a valid disability certificate.
However, in many instances, a UDID card is also accepted as valid proof.

What is the procedure for obtaining or renewing the card?

You can apply online through the Railways' Divyangjan Portal.
Additionally, applications can also be submitted via the Central Government's Seva Portal.
Both obtaining a new card and renewing an existing one are simple and straightforward processes.
