It is remarkable to witness a TV crime drama come together in quite the way this one did, managing to captivate audiences in a way rarely seen before, with viewers continuing to sing its praises online years down the line.

The Netflix series Mindhunter quickly developed a devoted following when it first landed on the streaming platform and is widely regarded as essential viewing for fans of the genre.

Its distinctive premise breathed life into the stories of serial killers, drawing inspiration from the 1995 true crime book by John E. Douglas and Mark Ishaker. The show centres on the formative era when criminal profiling was first being introduced within law enforcement, and how that groundbreaking methodology shaped the FBI's investigative work.

At the core of the narrative are three central figures - FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, alongside psychologist Wendy Carr - who oversee the FBI's Behavioural Science Division. The trio are portrayed on screen by actors Holt McCallany, Jonathan Groff and Anna Torv respectively.

Armed with this fresh approach to their work, the team aims to deepen their understanding of the criminals they encounter and, ultimately, crack ongoing cases in the process.

Throughout the series, the team conducts interviews with notorious killers, most notably Ed Kemper, enabling them to gain a profound insight into the motivations behind his abhorrent crimes and the workings of a sociopathic mind.

A viewer shared their thoughts on the show on Rotten Tomatoes, writing: "Mindhunter is a slow-burn psychological thriller that gets under your skin in the best way. The writing is sharp, the performances are outstanding, and the attention to detail in portraying real-life serial killers is chilling."

Another added: "One of the greatest shows ever, Netflix is a blind company for not funding another season."

Meanwhile, one viewer wrote, "Very, very well written and hooked right from the start, this could easily be one of the best shows Netflix created. Shame on them for letting it slip away."

What many would argue contributed significantly to the show's success was its direction from award-winning filmmaker David Fincher. He is celebrated for his work on iconic films such as Seven and Fight Club, while also leaving his mark with modern classics including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl.

The first series of Mindhunter launched with a full 10 episodes in October 2017, followed by a second, highly anticipated series in August 2019. However, it was subsequently announced

no further series would be produced.

It is widely believed the show's demise came down to budgeting and costs, as production simply became too expensive.

According to reports, Fincher acknowledged the show failed to attract sufficient viewers to justify the considerable expense of the storytelling required, and Netflix was unwilling to foot the bill.

One viewer hailed the opening two series as "one of the best dramas ever produced for television!" while another said: "One of my favourite shows. I still can believe it was cancelled."

Mindhunter is available to stream on Netflix now.
