saree cancer problem
Do you also notice the deep mark made by the petticoat string on your waist after wearing a saree? If yes, then do not take it lightly. In recent times, a new term to this problem ‘Sari Cancer’ has come into discussion. However, it is important to understand that wearing a saree does not cause cancer, rather it is a result of improper tying and carelessness. Let us know from Dr. Success Baghmar (Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad) about how saree cancer occurs and how it can be prevented.
What is Saree Cancer?
This condition is medically called ‘Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma’. This is a type of skin cancer, which arises due to continuous rubbing and irritation on the skin of the waist. According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, cancer cases are increasing in India, but the incidence of skin cancer, especially saree cancer, is still relatively low.
main reason
This cancer does not occur suddenly, rather it is the result of years of negligence:
- Constant rubbing: Tying the petticoat string too tightly around the waist puts pressure on the skin.
- Heat and Humidity: In the climate of India, where sweat accumulates, the friction and moisture causes inflammation in the skin.
- Lack of cleanliness: Accumulation of sweat and dirt can lead to fungal infections or sores, which can cause serious health problems.
Who is at greater risk?
Women who have been tying the petticoat string tightly for a long time are more at risk of saree cancer. Apart from this, not taking care of cleanliness and sweating also increases this risk.
Early symptoms: The early symptoms of ‘sari cancer’ can be difficult to detect, as they appear as itching, darkening of the skin or flaking. Women often mistake these for normal belt marks or rashes.
Symptoms not to ignore
- Itching or burning around the waist.
- Thickening or darkening of the skin.
- Wound that does not heal for a long time.
- Foul-smelling discharge or bleeding from the wound.
preventive measures
It is easy to prevent saree cancer. You don’t need to give up wearing saree, just make some changes:
- Keep the petticoat string loose: Do not tie it so tightly that it digs into the skin.
- Change the location of the knot: Do not tie the knot of the string at the same place every day.
- Use a wide belt: Choose petticoats with wide belts or elastic bands.
- Fabric selection: Wear cotton clothes, which absorb sweat.
- Cleanliness: Keep the groin area clean and dry.
