Navratri 2026 There are many such temples on the holy land of India, which are known for their divinity, but the temple of Maa Sharda located in Maihar, Madhya Pradesh is famous all over the world for its mysterious story.

There is a belief about this temple situated at a height of 600 feet above sea level that even today an invisible devotee is the first to appear here.

According to religious texts, this place is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. Legend has it that, when Lord Shiva was performing Tandav over the mortal remains of Mother Sati, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's body into parts with the Sudarshan Chakra. It is believed that the necklace of Mother Sati had fallen on this Trikuta mountain. This city was named Maihar because of the mother's necklace falling there.

The sound of a bell comes in a closed door

The biggest mystery of Maihar Temple begins after sunset. At night, when the doors of the temple are closed and there is silence on the mountain, the sounds of bells and prayers are still heard from inside the temple. For years it has been seen that when the priests open the doors of the temple in the morning, the idol of Maa Sharda is found adorned with fresh flowers and sandalwood. Devotees have an unwavering belief that even today, the ardent devotee of the Goddess, Alha comes here in the Brahma Muhurta and worships the Mother Goddess first.

Who were Alha and Udal?

Alha and Udal were great warriors of Bundelkhand, whose names are considered synonymous with bravery. According to folklore, Alha had performed such severe penance for Maa Sharda that the goddess appeared to him in person and blessed him with immortality. These brothers had given a tough challenge to even a huge army like Prithviraj Chauhan in the war. Later, on the orders of Guru Gorakhnath, Alha gave up his weapons and took sannyasa and got absorbed in the service of his mother. Even today, Alha's huge sword and throne are kept safe in the temple premises, seeing which one can get an idea of his stature and power.

The journey of 1063 stairs and the arena of Alha Dev

To reach the top of Trikuta mountain, devotees have to climb about 1063 steps (now ropeway facility is also available). There is a pond below the mountain behind the temple, called Alha Talab and nearby there is also the Akhara of Alha Dev, where it is believed that he used to exercise.

Still an inexplicable puzzle for science

Many times people have tried to solve the mystery of who worships in a closed temple, but every time they have met with failure. Even in today's modern era, this incident remains the same. It is prohibited to stay there after the doors of the temple are closed, because it is believed that whoever tries to witness that divine worship is unable to escape.
