Mahindra & Mahindra’s Patent Portfolio Jumps 20 Times In A Decade

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), doubling down on its focus on research and development and the ‘Make in India’ push, as the firm reported a massive surge in its intellectual property portfolio. Over the past ten years, the company’s granted patents have multiplied 20 times, rising from just 56 patents since inception in FY16 to an impressive 1,334 by FY26. This surge highlights the company’s long-term strategy of investing in cutting-edge innovation and strengthening its technological strength.
The company’s total patent applications have reached 2,728 as of March 2026. Notably, the efficiency of converting applications into granted patents has improved significantly. The conversion ratio has climbed from 8 per cent in FY16 to over 65 per cent for applications filed over the past decade.
This improvement signals not just increased filing activity but also a sharper focus on quality, relevance, and successful execution in patent approvals. It reflects M&M’s growing maturity in managing intellectual property and aligning its innovations with global standards.
Automotive And Farm Businesses Drive Growth
A closer look at the patent mix reveals that 60 per cent of the 1,334 granted patents are linked to the Automotive Business, while the remaining 40 per cent are attributed to the Farm Business. This balanced distribution highlights the company’s dual strength in both mobility and agricultural solutions, as per the company's statement.
The expanding patent portfolio also includes contributions from its subsidiary, Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd, further reinforcing M&M’s commitment to electric and sustainable technologies.
Beyond patents, M&M’s innovation excellence has been recognised across multiple prestigious platforms. Over the past year, the company has secured accolades such as the CII IP Award for the Best Patent Portfolio and the CII Innovation Award, which lists it among India’s Top 50 Innovative Companies 2025.
It has also been honoured with the CII National Award for Industry-Academia Partnership, the Questel IP Excellence Award, and recognition at the CMO Asia Awards 2025, according to the company's official statement.
