Bengaluru: MoS (Railways & Jalshakti) V Somanna, Haveri-Gadag MP Basavaraj Bommai and Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Wadiyar on Thursday said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sacrificed the interests of Karnataka with his party Congress joining others to defeat the Constitution amendment bill.

Somanna and Wadiyar addressed a press conference in Mysuru while Bommai spoke to the media in Haveri.

Somanna hit out at the Opposition bloc led by the Congress for defeating the Constitutional amendment bill to provide for 33% for women in the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies and increase the number of seats in each state by 50% of their existing strength.

The conduct of the Opposition parties exposed the hypocrisy of those who speak of women’s empowerment, but go against their interests when it matters, the two BJP MPs said at a press conference in Mysuru, while calling the Bill a landmark move.

The MoS (Railways & Jalshakti), who represents Tumakuru in the Lok Sabha, called the decision to defeat the bill in the Lok Sabha a regressive approach by the Opposition and demanded accountability from those who blocked a historic step towards gender equality. Karnataka State Mahila Morcha President C. Manjula was also present at the media conference.

In Haveri, Bommai, who is also a former CM, urged Siddaramaiah to persuade his party to review their stand and help pave the way for the successful passage of the Bill.
