The ‘war’ in Hormuz continues, this time the US Navy seized an oil tanker bound for Iran

The Iran-US ‘war’ continues in Hormuz, though not on Middle Eastern soil. Yesterday the Islamic Revolutionary Guards attacked three ships in a row. A day later, the US seized an oil tanker bound for Iran on charges of fuel oil smuggling. The tanker is Guyana flagged. The previous name was Phoenix.

The region of the Indian Ocean where the previous Iranian ship, the Tiffany, was seized. This time also the news that the oil tanker to Iran has been confiscated. The US Navy released a video showing the seizure of the Iranian tanker. The video is titled ‘Majestic X’. “We will continue to conduct global maritime operations to disrupt (Iran’s) illicit networks, intercepting vessels that provide them with aid,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

Notably, the US Treasury Department also imposed sanctions on the ship in 2024 for smuggling crude oil to Iran in violation of US sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic. Iran attacked the Strait of Hormuz within a few hours of Trump’s ceasefire announcement. Two cargo ships were seized by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after they were fired upon. The two ships are named ‘Epaminodes’ and ‘MSC Francesca’ respectively.
