Natwest will shut 14 branches in May, amid a crisis on UK high streets, with companies suffering from rising costs and shifting consumer habits. NatWest, Halifax and Lloyds Bank are among the major banks that are seeing more and more of their customers bank online rather than in branch, and are therefore forced to axe branches from their networks.
It has been said that the closures are due to fewer customers using branch services, with the majority of transactions now done online. The bank has previously stressed that customers requiring in-person assistance can still access everyday services at any branch within the NatWest group. For instance, NatWest clients are welcome to use RBS branches and vice versa.
The bank announced in January that it was closing more of its locations, citing a shift toward digital banking.
NatWest has confirmed the dates of the other branches closing down: 14 in May, 2026; a further 14 in June; one each in August and September; and three more in February 2027.
A spokesperson for NatWest said: "We've recently announced that we're closing some branches.
"You can still bank with us in many other ways. Banking has changed dramatically in recent years. There's more demand for mobile and online services, allowing you to benefit from a faster and easier way to bank.
"We understand the closure of your local branch will bring some changes, and we want to make sure you are fully informed and supported every step of the way."
It added that customers could find further information through the closure guides available on its website.
The upcoming cuts are the latest and follow more than 100 in 2025. Speaking previously, a NatWest spokesperson said: "We carefully assess where and when we make the difficult decision to close a branch to minimise the impact any change may have on our customers and colleagues."
