New Delhi: Lamine Yamal limped off after scoring as FC Barcelona extended their La Liga lead with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo.
Yamal won and converted a spot-kick in the 40th minute after he was brought down inside the penalty box but his celebrations were short-lived as he immediately fell to the ground and signalled that he was hurt.
He was seen clutching be his left hamstring and after being attended by his team’s doctors left the field on his own, briefly speaking with coach Hansi Flick on the sidelines before heading straight into the dressing room tunnel.
“We just hope that Yamal’s injury is not significant,” Barca midfielder Pedri told Movistar Plus.
“We still don’t know and I imagine we will need to wait for the medical tests tomorrow but I’m optimistic because he is young and should get back soon.
“It was a very important win because we needed to keep nine points clear at the top. We managed against a very tough opponent and that was crucial.”
Tense wait for YamalBarca didn’t immediately inform on the extent of Yamal’s injury, sustained less than two months before he is set to make his World Cup debut with Spain.
Flick later said that the 18-year-old’s injury would be evaluated on Thursday.
Barca extended their lead to 82 points, nine clear of second-placed Real Madrid with six games remaining.
But the win was overshadowed by Yamal’s injury with a Clasico set to be played in two weeks and the World Cup beginning on June 11.
In other matches, Atletico Madrid plunged to their fourth successive defeat, losing 3-2 against Elche, who with 35 points climbed to 15th spot, two clear of the relegation places.
Atletico remained on the fourth spot on 57 points, eight ahead of fifth-placed Real Betis
