New Delhi: If there is a trim missing in the Mercedes-AMG CLE lineup, it is definitely the CLE 63. The CLE 53, which makes 443 bhp, is definitely not the summit of AMG’s capabilities. This is the reason that there is an even hotter coupe that is coming, but this won’t be a CLE 63, but something more extreme.
Under the skin, the coupe is expected to come with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine in place of a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system. The shift comes amid a somewhat lukewarm reception to AMG’s electrified four-cylinder models, which might have prompted Mercedes to return to a higher-performance combination.
What will the engine in the new Mercedes extreme CLE look like?
Even though the official figures aren’t known, media reports suggest the new V8 could produce up to 646hp, making it significantly more powerful than the present-day CLE 53 and competing with cars like the BMW M4. The engine is part of a new-gen V8 from AMG and will pair with the brand’s nine-speed Speedshift automatic transmission, with the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system as standard.
The engine is also to get a flat-plane crankshaft design, which should make for sharper throttle response and higher revving capability.
Mercedes had teased their new ‘extreme’ AMG earlier this year, but didn’t call it the CLE 63 and rather said it would be based on the popular CLE. Mercedes had captioned the car photo with ‘Uncompromising AMG’. The carmaker did say that the car would be the second Mythos series model after the AMG PureSpeed, which the brand had based on the SL, so the car will most likely come with quite a unique name.
The teaser images Mercedes released earlier this year had shown the car would come with excellent styling, which includes prominent AMG features like the grille and exhaust, but the automaker still covered the car in camouflage. Some styling details include dive planes on the front bumper and the aggressive side skirts, along with vents on the front fenders and on the bumper.
