A new picture of the Royal Family has been shared by Buckingham Palace to remember the life of Queen Elizabeth II, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday (April 21). However, the picture has sparked concerns about the Firm's future.
The official photograph features King Charles III and Queen Camilla, The Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince Edward and the Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra. Meanwhile, extended non-working members of the Royal Family were absent from the picture taken in Marble Hall, including Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It has left social media users concerned about the lack of young working royals.
One user quoted the picture on X, writing: "As much as I love this new photo and what it represents, I do think there is legitimate concern that of those pictured, all but 2 are over 60 and all but 4 are over 75. The Royal Family need some younger representatives, like James and Louise (who should be Prince and Princess)."
Another person added: "Agreed..... the slimming down of the Royal Family appears to have been waaay too brutal!" Allaedc wrote: "All Charles' fault wanting to slim down the monarchy."
While a third user put: "William is going to be a lonely king..." AriadneOliverYY agreed: "Too old. They desperately need to bring in Zara, Beatrice, Eugenie."
One other person said: "That looks like a brochure for senior living, not a royal family." Another user added: "This looks like a brochure for a retirement home pale and stale."
The number of working British royals has decreased in recent years following the deaths of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, as well as the former Prince Andrew being stripped of his title and the departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Many of the current working royals are in their 70s or 80s, exceeding state retirement age.
However, others are less concerned with one person writing: "There's George, Charlotte, Louis, Louise and James!! All the European royals don't have working royals..look at Spain, Denmark etc."
Another person agreed: "This talking point keeps being repeated like it's a script for a bot network. All other Royal families are just 2 parents and their kids. George's reign was one small family, and Elizabeth started out her reign that way. There is no good reason for a large party of hangers on."
One user wrote: "They will step up when the time comes." Meanwhile, HHodgkinFan asked: "Why do we need anyone beyond the monarch, heir and heirs children?"
