SPG Commando: Safeguarding the nation's most critical office is not a task just anyone can undertake. Behind this responsibility lies rigorous training, a stringent selection process, and the collective strength of hand-picked personnel with impeccable service records.
SPG Commando: In India, the specialized unit entrusted with the security of the Prime Minister is known as the SPG (Special Protection Group). It is widely regarded as one of the country's most highly trained and elite security forces. Established in 1985, the group was accorded formal statutory status in 1988. The primary mandate of the SPG is to provide close-quarter protection to the Prime Minister and their immediate family members. Whether it involves an election rally, a foreign diplomatic tour, or a private engagement, this team remains fully prepared to identify and neutralize any potential threat.
Can One Join the SPG Directly?
A question that frequently crosses people's minds is whether it is possible to be recruited directly into the SPG. To join the SPG, one must first be a member of another security force or police service. It functions as an elite deployment unit, where only those officers and personnel possessing exemplary service records are selected.
The Right Path to Becoming an SPG Commando
The first step toward joining the SPG is to enlist in a prestigious security force—such as the CRPF, BSF, or CISF. Additionally, officers from the Indian Police Service (IPS) are also eligible for induction into the SPG. Following their selection into these services, candidates undergo rigorous training and gain valuable field experience—factors that subsequently play a pivotal role in their selection for the SPG.
The Selection Process
The SPG selection process is exceptionally rigorous. It involves a comprehensive assessment of a candidate's physical fitness, mental acuity, and decision-making capabilities. The physical examination places a strong emphasis on stamina, speed, and reflexes. The objective of the mental assessment is to determine whether a candidate can remain composed and make sound decisions even when operating under high-pressure or stressful situations. Furthermore, the selection process includes a thorough medical examination as well as personal interviews conducted by senior-ranking officers. Success in this field belongs to those who are able to prove themselves at every stage throughout the entire process.
Eligibility Criteria
It is mandatory for the candidate to be an Indian citizen.
The candidate's age should be approximately 35 years.
A minimum qualification of having passed the 12th grade is required; however, for higher-ranking positions, a bachelor's degree or higher qualification is advantageous.
Salary and Benefits
SPG Commandos are provided with an attractive salary and allowances commensurate with their responsibilities and the inherent risks involved. In addition to their basic salary, they receive special allowances, risk allowances, superior housing facilities, and high-standard medical care. However, the true reward derived from this job lies in the honor and pride it brings, as they bear the responsibility for the security of the country's Prime Minister.
