The Enforcement Directorate (ED) case alleging interference by Mamata Banerjee during a raid was heard in the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday, with arguments concluding for the day. Counsel for Banerjee and the state police argued that the ED’s plea is not maintainable.
During the hearing, the court made strong observations, cautioning against turning the matter into a Centre versus state dispute. It remarked that the issue stemmed from “an individual who happens to be the Chief Minister,” adding that the Constitution’s framers would not have envisaged a situation where a CM intervenes during an ongoing probe. The court noted that such actions could pose a threat to democratic functioning.
The court will hear submissions from Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the ED, on Thursday.
