IPL 2026: How has Ishan Malinga become the most dangerous weapon of Sunrisers Hyderabad?
Samira Vishwas | April 22, 2026 8:24 AM CST

It rained runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Tuesday (April 21) night. More than 435 runs were scored in the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals (DC). SRH, when invited to bat first, scored 242/2 with the help of a century from Abhishek Sharma (135 not out). In response, DC also made a good start and scored 98 runs at the loss of 1 wicket in 9 overs. KL Rahul and Nitish Rana were scoring boundaries easily. DC’s target seemed to be rising but Ishan Malinga derailed their innings by taking 2 wickets in 2 balls.

In the first 10th over, Saqib Hussain took the wicket of Rahul (37). After this Ishaan started the next over with a wicket. He got set batsman Nitish Rana (57) caught by Abhishek and then clean bowled David Miller (0) on the next ball and turned the match towards SRH. In the end, SRH restricted DC to 195/9 and registered a big win by 48 runs. Ishaan took 4 wickets for 32 runs in 4 overs.

Did wonders against CSK also

Ishaan had earlier bowled brilliantly against CSK. He took 3 wickets for 29 runs in 4 overs and helped SRH win by 10 runs. CSK had to score 84 runs in the last 10 overs and had 7 wickets left. Ishan dismissed Sarfaraz Khan in the 11th over and then sent Matthew Short to the pavilion in the 16th over to put SRH ahead in the match. So much so that he spent only 10 runs in the 18th over, leaving young bowlers like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prafulla Hinge 29 runs to defend. Ishaan was awarded the Player of the Match award for this excellent performance.

Ishaan becomes lethal in the second half of the innings

SRH gives one over to Ishan in the powerplay. After this, he is being used in the second half of the innings i.e. between 11th and 20th over. With his ability to reverse swing, he is proving to be extremely lethal in this phase. He had turned the match against CSK also at the same stage. His average (14.05) is the best after Prasidh Krishna among the bowlers who have bowled more than 100 balls in the second half of the innings since the beginning of IPL 2025. Not only this, it is also economical. His economy (9.14) is the best after Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh, Marco Jansen and Pat Cummins. This is why he has now emerged as SRH’s most dangerous weapon.
