News India Live, Digital Desk: Amid political excitement, a recent statement by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has created a stir in the country’s politics. While addressing an election rally in Velachery, Tamil Nadu, Kharge made very sharp remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He compared PM Modi to a ‘terrorist’, after which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has opened its front. However, seeing the controversy increasing, Kharge has also presented clarification on his statement.

What is the whole matter? Why did Kharge give such a statement?

Actually, Mallikarjun Kharge was attacking the alleged coordination between AIADMK and BJP in Tamil Nadu. Taking aim at the regional party AIADMK, he said that how can those who believe in the ideology of Annadurai stand with PM Modi. Kharge’s attitude appeared very strict during the rally.

Kharge said: “These AIADMK people who put up Annadurai’s photo, how can they associate with Modi? He (PM Modi) is a terrorist. His party does not believe in equality and justice. Those who are associating with him are weakening democracy.”

When the controversy escalated, Kharge clarified: ‘I did not mean that’

After being surrounded from all sides over the statement, the Congress President issued a clarification regarding his comment. He said that he meant something else. Kharge clarified, “I did not say that he is a terrorist. What I meant was that he always gives threats. He has institutions like ED, IT and CBI in his hands, using which he scares people and political parties.” Kharge alleged that the government is doing politics of intimidation.

Government cornered on delimitation and women’s reservation bill

At the rally, Kharge described the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha as a ‘victory for democracy’. He accused the BJP of playing a ‘dangerous game’ by linking women’s reservation to the 2011 census and delimitation. Kharge’s argument was that if delimitation took place, it would cause huge loss to states like Tamil Nadu which had effective control over the population. He also appreciated the unity of the opposition and the role of Chief Minister MK Stalin in stopping this bill.

BJP’s counterattack: Piyush Goyal gave a befitting reply

BJP has expressed strong objection to this statement of Kharge. Union Minister Piyush Goyal hit back and said that the opposition is scared of defeat. He said that the people of the country are with PM Modi and the NDA alliance. Citing the crowd gathered at the road show of Home Minister Amit Shah and Chandrababu Naidu, Piyush Goyal said that public support is the reason for the opposition’s frustration.

It is noteworthy that the government could not get two-thirds majority to pass the proposed bill. 298 votes were cast in favor of the bill and 230 against it. This bill included a proposal to increase the Lok Sabha seats to 816 and 33 percent women’s reservation.
