A large-scale enrolment campaign in council-run schools across Uttar Pradesh has recorded a strong start, achieving nearly one-fourth of last year’s total admissions within just 20 days. The initiative, which began in April and will continue until July, is aimed at increasing participation in primary and upper primary education by bringing more children into the formal schooling system.

According to official data, more than 8.79 lakh students have been newly enrolled so far in the current academic session. This accounts for approximately 26 percent of the total enrolment recorded in the previous year, when over 34 lakh students joined council schools in Uttar Pradesh. The early figures indicate a steady pace in the initial phase of the campaign.

The enrolment drive is being carried out across more than 1.3 lakh government schools in the state. It includes activities such as door-to-door outreach, awareness campaigns, and identification of children who are currently out of school. Teachers and local officials have been tasked with engaging communities and encouraging parents to enrol their children.

Initial trends suggest that the highest enrolment has been recorded in Class 1 and Class 6. Class 1 continues to see the largest number of new admissions, reflecting entry into formal schooling, while Class 6 marks a key transition stage for students moving into upper primary levels. Other classes have also seen enrolments, though in smaller numbers.

While the early progress highlights increased participation, observers point out that maintaining this momentum over the coming months will be important. Continued engagement with communities, adequate school infrastructure, and measures to ensure student retention are likely to influence the overall success of the campaign.

As the drive progresses towards its July deadline, efforts are expected to intensify, particularly in areas where enrolment levels remain low. The focus will remain on identifying out-of-school children and facilitating their entry into the education system.
