A UK hotel that was once on sale for £750,000 has collapsed into liquidation. The demise of The Martello Hotel was published on the Gazette website on April 17. The former hotel and venue function situated east of Hull City Centre was known for its hospitable staff and good value.
The cause of its collapse is not known; however, it comes amid financial challenges across the wider hospitality sector. Michael Paul Roome of Leading Business Services and Steven Hodgson of Clough Corporate Solutions Limited were appointed as joint liquidators on April 10, according to the public record.
The property had previously been put up for sale by commercial property agents Garness Jones, with offers invited in the region of £750,000. It was advertised as having a former bar and restaurant that was "in need of a refurbishment", and could be converted into multiple units, including a cafe, restaurant, retail, office, financial services or medical use. The first and second floors have been converted into 28 rooms, consisting of six studios, 19 doubles and three singles.
The hotel once had a 4.4-star rating on Google, with customers praising the staff and the low prices.
One person wrote: "Always clean, beautiful and well equipped rooms. The Martello is the only place I will stay when in Hull. Great customer service from Debbie and Rob and always someone handy if any issues."
Another said: "Really lovely staff friendly atmosphere in the hotel and very comfortable environment.
"I had some issues at the beginning but quickly resolved and Debbie, in particular, when the extra mile to make sure that I was comfortable and had a restful stay. Would highly recommend this hotel, particularly if you like the personal touch and a home away from home environment."
Agents also highlighted the "excellent car parking situated to the rear" on the listing, as well as its prime location, close to Hull City Centre, Hull Docks and Freeport.
According to On The Market, the property is no longer for sale.
The Express has reached out to the liquidators for a comment.
