Before the local body elections, a big alleged hawala racket has been exposed in Surat, Gujarat. Surat Crime Branch has exposed this network and claimed that in the last four months, illegal cash worth about ₹ 1 crore was sent from Delhi to Surat. The case is being jointly investigated by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) and Umra Police. According to the police, this network allegedly belonged to some people associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the funds were to be used in local elections. However, there has been no official response from the party in this regard.
Investigation has revealed that businessman Himanshu Pahuja, resident of Janakpuri, Delhi, used to send money through this network. In Surat, this amount was received by persons named Akash Mishra and Ajay Tiwari, who are said to be associated with local political activities.
DCP (Crime) Bhavesh Rozia said, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that this money was to be used for local elections in Surat. The involvement of about 10 other people and several Angadiya firms is also suspected.” He said that information about the matter has also been given to the Income Tax Department.
Police have collected CCTV footage from local Angadiya firms, which allegedly shows large scale cash transactions and counting. Officials say it was an organized interstate network, which was active between Delhi and Gujarat.
According to sources, Akash Mishra had earlier been the personal assistant of former Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain. At the same time, Ajay Tiwari is said to be involved in the management and distribution of funds at the local level.
The investigating agencies suspect that this illicit cash was being used in election activities, such as organizing rallies, making payments to workers and other clandestine political campaigns. If these allegations are proved, it will be considered a violation of the code of conduct and income tax laws. At present, the police have interrogated Himanshu Pahuja for a long time and he has been kept under surveillance. Further investigation is ongoing in the matter.
This revelation has raised new questions regarding election funding and political transparency. The investigating agencies are now busy searching for other people associated with this network and possible political connections.
