The British Vietnam Caving Expedition Team has discovered a sinkhole-like cave featuring an underground waterfall in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO world natural heritage site home to world’s largest cave Son Doong.

The park’s management board said Monday the cave named Cha Ngheo is 583 meters long, 45 meters deep, and 751 meters high.

It lies within the national park in Kim Dien Commune of Quang Tri Province.

The cave descends steeply to an underground stream, where a waterfall has formed. It remains largely unexplored, with signs that the system is still developing and could expand into a much larger cave network.

Details of this discovery will be announced at the end of April.

The 900-square-kilometer Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, which UNESCO labeled as a global heritage site in 2003, is home to over 500 caves and grottoes that date back some 400 million years.

Around 40 caves including Son Doong, the world’s largest cave, are now open to visitors.
