Kiran Powar has been appointed head coach of the Assam men’s team for the 2026-27 domestic season, marking his first assignment as a senior side coach. The development places Powar at the centre of Assam’s red-ball and white-ball preparations, following his previous role with Mumbai’s U-23 setup. Confirming the move, Powar said, “I am delighted to be appointed as the Assam Ranji team coach. Really looking forward towards working with them," indicating a transition from age-group cricket to full senior responsibility.
The appointment comes after Powar’s recent exposure to the Assam cricket structure during the CK Nayudu Trophy, where he travelled with the Mumbai U-23 side. His familiarity with the system and administrative approach of the Assam Cricket Association influenced the decision to accept the role, aligning with the state unit’s ongoing restructuring.
Coaching transition and background
Powar’s coaching progression follows a playing career that spanned Mumbai, Baroda and Assam, where he accumulated nearly 3500 runs across 71 first-class and List A matches. His transition into coaching has been gradual, with responsibilities at the developmental level before this elevation.
He acknowledged the factors behind his decision, stating,
“I was really impressed with their vision when I had come here as Mumbai U-23 coach."
The statement reflects an emphasis on long-term planning within Assam’s cricket framework, which has sought stability through structured appointments.
The move also situates Powar within a cricketing lineage, being the elder brother of Ramesh Powar, who has held national coaching responsibilities. However, this appointment represents an independent pathway, focused on domestic team development rather than national roles.

Departure from Mumbai and future outlook
Powar’s exit from Mumbai marks the end of his association with the state where he built much of his cricketing identity. He expressed gratitude towards the Mumbai Cricket Association and its president Ajinkya Naik, stating,
“My sincere thanks to MCA and its president, Ajinkya Naik, who backed me when a lot of people were against me. I am leaving Mumbai with a heavy heart. Whatever I am today in life, it is because of Mumbai Cricket."
With Assam, Powar steps into a system aiming to translate structural intent into on-field results. The upcoming season will mark his first test in managing senior-level performance, squad balance, and competitive consistency within India’s domestic circuit.
