Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants will see a reassessment change from this month.
Claimants will be able to keep their payments for longer without facing reassessment under sweeping new changes. The minimum period for which someone will receive PIP is being extended to three years under changes introduced on April 6. This is when their case could be reviewed again, depending on their circumstances. The extension offers PIP claimants greater security and certainty over how long they will continue to receive their payments, reports Birmingham Live.
This will then increase to five years at the next review, provided they are still considered eligible.
Previously, cases could be reassessed in as little as nine months.
The DWP overhaul is designed to free up valuable time by reducing the frequency of case reviews, allowing staff to concentrate on tackling a significant backlog.
PIP is the principal disability benefit, paid to those who require assistance with mobility or carrying out everyday tasks.
The benefit is worth a maximum of £194 a week.
This comes amid an ongoing review into the future of PIP, which is expected to publish its findings in the autumn.
The review could ultimately result in cuts being made to the disability benefit.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting indicated this week that the Government would introduce some reductions to welfare spending in order to facilitate an increase in defence expenditure.
