Major Earthquake Hits Japan

On Monday morning, Japan experienced a powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning, urging residents in coastal areas to evacuate immediately. The Prime Minister's office has announced the formation of a special team to address this natural disaster. This incident recalls the devastating earthquake of 2011, which had a magnitude of 9.0 and resulted in over 18,000 fatalities.

The JMA reported that the earthquake struck in the northern region of Japan. They indicated that a tsunami could follow, with waves potentially reaching heights of around 10 feet. The quake occurred at 4:53 PM local time, and its effects were felt far and wide, with significant tremors shaking tall buildings in Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers away.

Tsunami Warning Issued
The agency has warned that tsunami waves could reach the northern coast shortly. They advised residents in coastal and riverbank areas to move to higher ground or secure buildings immediately. The meteorological agency cautioned that the tsunami could cause extensive damage.

Government on High Alert
In response to the earthquake and tsunami threat, the government has mobilized a response team. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents in the warned areas to seek higher and safer locations. He also mentioned that the government is working to assess the impact of the earthquake across various regions.

Reports indicate that ships at Hachinohe Port have begun to leave as a precaution. Additionally, bullet train services between Tokyo and Aomori have been suspended. Authorities are urging citizens living near the coast to evacuate quickly, as tsunami waves are expected to hit the shore imminently.
