Tragedy struck as a spectator died after being hit by an airborne rally car. The incident during the FIA CODASUR South American Rally Championship saw a vehicle catch a dirt mound before rolling into the air, sending onlookers standing on the course side sprawling.
Racers Didier Arias and Hector Nunez were involved in the accident in Argentina and escaped without serious injury, but multiple fans were hurt, with one person deceased, according to the FIA. The car had barrel-rolled into the spectator area.
According to reports in Argentina, three people were injured, with a 25-year-old woman from Córdoba later dying in a regional hospital. A further woman is said to have suffered a broken ankle.
Round 2 of the rally championship, the Giulio Cesare special stage, near Mina Clavero, was completely suspended as security protocols were activated. Emergency services intervened at the event, with the circumstances of the crash under investigation.
While expressing their condolences, the FIA noted they would help in any investigation.
"The FIA is deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred today during Round 2 of the FIA CODASUR Rally Championship at Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero, in which one spectator lost their life and two others were injured," a release read.
"We extend our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, and our thoughts remain with all those injured and affected. We thank the emergency services and medical teams for their rapid response.
"The FIA will provide its full support to the organisers of Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero, Automóvil Club Argentino (ACA), CODASUR and the relevant local authorities in their investigation into the incident."
FIA Rally Sudamericano offered more details of the incident on social media. "Today, during the competition, an incident occurred on a timed section, resulting in a serious accident. Tragically, a spectator in the area has died.

"The established safety protocols for the race were immediately activated, with emergency medical and police rescue services responding. Sports authorities, along with the relevant agencies, are working to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
"Support has been provided to the family and friends of the deceased. The event has been definitively suspended. The organisers express their deepest condolences and extend their sympathies to the family and loved ones during this difficult time."
