Synopsis

Bangkok faces a high tide alert along the Chao Phraya River. Authorities warn of potential flooding in low-lying areas and key roads as water levels are set to peak Monday. Strong winds are pushing water towards river mouths, increasing overflow risks. Saltwater intrusion is also a concern. Residents are advised to stay vigilant as the alert continues until Tuesday.

Authorities in Bangkok have issued a high tide alert for communities along the Chao Phraya River, warning of possible flooding in low-lying areas and along key roads as water levels are expected to peak on Monday.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said the highest tide is forecast to reach 3.92 metres at around 8:22 pm. Rising water levels could overflow into riverside communities, damage property and affect water quality.

Low-lying areas and roads vulnerable

The warning covers areas outside flood barriers and low-lying communities along the river. Authorities said water may spill onto roads, including Sukhumvit, Suksawat and Rama II, which are key routes in the city.

According to a report by Bangkok Post, on Sunday night, flooding was reported in Klong Toey district after high tide surges damaged parts of a temporary flood barrier. Water entered residential areas in Koh Klang community, affecting up to nine households.

Officials said work crews reinforced weak points with sandbags and brought the situation under control, while continuing to monitor conditions.

Weather conditions driving water levels

The BMA said stronger southerly and southeasterly winds over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are contributing to higher water levels. These conditions are pushing water towards river mouths, increasing the risk of overflow.

The administration also warned of saltwater intrusion, which may affect water used for consumption, household purposes and agriculture.

The alert remains in effect until Tuesday, with authorities closely tracking river levels and potential flooding risks.
