Wisteria is a truly spectacular addition to any garden, and it won't be long before it bursts into bloom. Its breathtaking abundance of flowers can be a real showstopper, but if you're concerned about them not flowering, there's no need to worry just yet.
Come May, your wisteria should be blooming magnificently. By this point, you ought to be spotting a few fresh leaves beginning to emerge on the plant in preparation for flowering. However, if yours hasn't reached that stage, you can check whether you've carried out these three straightforward tasks.
These will help to encourage a greater number of blooms in the coming weeks and in future years.
In a recent TikTok video, gardening expert Ish said: "If your wisteria hasn't started flowering yet, don't panic, there's still time to get it going, and I'm gonna show you exactly how."
First and foremost, you'll want to ensure your wisteria is positioned somewhere it can soak up plenty of sunlight. Quite simply, the sunnier the spot, the better. Where possible, try to keep wisteria in a location that isn't subjected to excessive wind, reports The Mirror.
To promote a lusher, denser growth, gardeners will need to give their wisteria a thorough spring feed. The gardening expert recommended powdered bloodfish or bone.
Simply scatter the feed across the surface of the soil and water it in. Should you prefer not to use bloodfish or bone, Ish recommended using slow-releasing feed pellets. These can be added to the soil, then gently mixed in before watering.
They will help deliver a burst of essential nutrients directly to the plant's roots, strengthening it and ultimately encouraging it to thrive.
The gardening expert noted that dogs are drawn to the scent of this type of feed, so should you choose to use it, ensure it is buried well beneath the surface of the soil. Gardeners can also cover the feed with a generous layer of compost.
One of Ish's top tips for giving wisteria an extra boost is that, approximately a month after completing these initial tasks, you can introduce a tomato feed to the wisteria.
He said: "Tomato feed massively increases the yields of flowers and vegetables. So, it's a little secret weapon for you."
