Having a lawn full of dandelions is one of the biggest pains of having a garden. This particularly bothersome lawn weed can be an eyesore to your perfect lawn if it decides to sprout unexpectedly. Worse still, they can grow all year round, but start to be a real pain from April onwards until October.

Once dandelions have established themselves in your lawn, removing them requires a thorough and well-timed approach. Dandelions can spread quickly through their deep taproots and airborne seeds, making complete eradication a challenge. While hand-weeding is highly effective for small dandelion infestations, it's not the best for larger-scale invasions. Instead, gardening experts claim that the best solution is to use a specific powerful product that not only removes dandelions but also makes the grass greener, thicker and healthier - a weed and feed fertiliser.

Weed and feed fertiliser is a multipurpose treatment that "kills weeds at the root", and grass gets fed so it's "instantly greener and thicker", according to the pros at The Grass People.

The experts at Turf Online agreed that weed and feed treatments "will deal with the dandelion problem whilst giving a lawn a boost".

They added: "There are special tools which can be used to uproot them, but this will inevitably be more laborious and less effective."

The specialists at Home Turf Lawn Care Service highlighted that maintaining a healthy lawn is the "best defence" against dandelions taking over your turf.

Fertilising not only helps in "maintaining a healthy lawn", but it also "helps your lawn to become thicker and denser", which will block out the sun and keep dandelion seeds from reaching the soil.

The Grass People pointed out that "timing is crucial" when it comes to weed and feed treatment application.

They said: "Applying the product at the right time ensures maximum effectiveness in eliminating weeds and promoting healthy grass growth."

April is the "ideal time to get a first application of weed and feed down on your lawn as the grass begins to grow again after dormancy in winter.

During this time, weeds become prevalent, which is why an application of this fertiliser is crucial in preventing them from taking over your lawn.

Make sure never to apply on newly seeded lawns; only apply on lawns six months or older. New grass will be too fragile for this kind of treatment.

Once you have applied this fertiliser, ensure you properly water it in or apply it just before it rains; otherwise, you could cause scorch on your lawn.

Additionally, you should avoid applying during very hot weather. It's better to apply on cooler evenings or on overcast days.
