A pensioner whose death on a public street is being investigated as murder has been fondly remembered as a "beautiful wee soul" by devastated neighbours. Elizabeth Colligan, known as Betty, was pronounced dead after being discovered injured on Cardowan Road in the Carntyne area of Glasgow's east end at around 4am on Saturday.

One neighbour said they were heartbroken upon learning that the 82-year-old, whom they had affectionately known as "wee Betty", had passed away. The tributes poured in as police continued their search for "dangerous" suspect Grant McKinnon, who was last spotted in the vicinity at the time of the incident. It is understood that McKinnon was known to Betty.

A neighbour said: "She's a lovely wee woman. I don't now why anyone wound want to hurt her. When I heard it was her I was hoping it wasn't true. I've known her for years and would stop and chat and give the dog a clap."

Another distressed resident said: "She was a beautiful wee soul. She used to be out walking all the time with her wee dog Brock, her Staffordshire terrier. She doted on him."

Nazi Ali, owner of Carntyne News, said: "She was a lovely lady. She would come in all the time for her papers. It's just so tragic. A lot of people round here know her as she would stop and talk to people. She was the lollipop lady at the school until she retired a few years back."

Shaken residents expressed their shock as the investigation continued on Sunday, with a substantial police presence remaining at the scene.

One local resident said: "I find it quite frightening. It's so sad. Such a waste of a woman's life. It is worrying. There could be someone still in the area hiding in a shed for all we know.

"At least there is a large police presence. I was woken by the police helicopter on Saturday morning, probably around 6am. It was a shock to hear a woman had died. This area is normally quite quiet. It's rare to hear of anything like this here."

Ten police vehicles were spotted along a stretch of Cardowan Road, which remained cordoned off on Sunday. Numerous officers were present and patrolling the surrounding area.

Forensics officers dressed in their distinctive white suits were observed on the street, with a tent erected outside a cottage block of flats.

Police Scotland launched an appeal on Saturday to locate Grant McKinnon, 30, who they say had vanished from the same vicinity at around 4am. The force has yet to confirm whether the two incidents are connected.

He was last seen wearing a black jacket with a red hood, or red hood lining, and blue jeans. Mr McKinnon has been described as white, 6ft tall, of slim build and with a shaved head.

Police Scotland put out an appeal to trace the man, with officers describing him as "dangerous". The force has urged members of the public not to approach him and to contact police immediately.

Detective Superintendent Gary Ferguson said: "Grant is considered to be dangerous and I'm appealing for information from the public to help us trace him as soon as possible. If anyone sees Grant, they should not approach him but contact police immediately."

Those with any information are urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident 0523 of 18 April, 2026. Crimestoppers can also be reached anonymously on 0800 555 111.
